To determine your Grade Point Average (GPA), each letter grade has a numerical value as indicated below. Note: numerical values are higher for Honors and AP classes if a grade of C or higher is earned. These classes are said to be weighted.
For most classes: For Honors and AP classes:
A = 4 A = 5
B = 3 B = 4
C = 2 C = 3
D = 1 D = 1
F = 0 F = 0
In addition to knowing the grade earned for each class, one must also know that credits awarded for each class. Here most classes are 0.5. Physical Education classes are 0.25. There are also just a few classes that are worth 0.625 credits.
Calculating the G.P.A.
Step 1 Calculate the Quality Points for each class
(Numerical grade value from above) x (credits for that course) =quality points for course
Step 2 Add the total number of quality points
Step 3 Add the total number of credits
Step 4 Divide number of quality points by total credits
EXAMPLE:
Grade | Numerical Value | x | Credits | = | Quality Points |
A | 4 | x | 0.5 | = | 2 |
B | 3 | x | 0.25 | = | 0.75 |
A | 4 | x | 0.5 | = | 2 |
C | 2 | x | 0.5 | = | 1 |
A | 4 | x | 0.5 | = | 2 |
B | 3 | x | 0.625 | = | 1.875 |
C | 2 | x | 0.5 | = | 1 |
Step 1
Step 2 Total Quality Points = 2 + .75 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 1.875 + 1 = 10.625
Step 3 Total Credits = 3.375
Step 4 GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credits
= 10.625 ÷ 3.375
= 3.148
CUMULATIVE GPA
To calculate the cumulative GPA combine the quality Points using the semester final grades for every semester and divide by the total credits earned.
