Mavericks Handbook 2012-13

Following is a list of the expectations, supplies, policies and classroom procedures that will be required of all students on the Mavericks team for the 2012-13 school year.  Students are responsible for all information contained in this document.

Mavericks Team Philosophy Statement

Our team is dedicated to creating a positive, nurturing, learning environment.  Our expectations for student conduct are based on the philosophy that each individual is responsible for his/her actions and words.  Success is forged by positive expectations of excellence and by an atmosphere of respect and mutual courtesy.  We believe that all our students are unique individuals with different learning styles and varying social and emotional needs.  We will strive to provide opportunities and encouragement for the development of positive attitudes, skills, knowledge, habits, and character traits as essential for enriched personal living, sound career choices, good human relationships, and contributive citizenship.

Mavericks Team – Goals

·         To provide a safe and positive learning environment where each person is

   responsible for his/her actions,

·         To treat one another with respect so that self-worth can grow,

·         To provide appropriate learning opportunities through teamwork,

·         To promote positive relationships among students, teachers, and parents.

Classroom Procedures

Hall Passes

Students must use the “hallway passport,” which is located in the planner, for access to halls.  Lost planners must be replaced at the student’s expense.  Hall passes are a privilege, not a right.

Classroom Policies

Grading

The Mavericks team will employ the district grading scale:

                A  100-90                               D    69-60

                B    89-80                                F     59 and below

                C    79-70

All Mavericks teachers are posting their grades using the electronic grading system provided by the district. At the beginning of the year, families receive a username and password to access this system. Be sure to put this in a safe place, since it permits access to current student progress. Contact the guidance office if this information is either not received or lost.

Academic Integrity

During assessment situations, silence is mandatory.  Talking and disruptive behavior will result in a loss of points.  Copying another person’s work or allowing another person to copy your work is an act of cheating and will result in a loss of points.  Disciplinary actions will follow.

Homework Policy

Homework helps reinforce what has been learned in class, prepares the students for upcoming lessons and tests, teaches responsibility, and helps students develop positive study habits.  Daily assignments will not be accepted late for full credit; work not completed by the assigned deadline will be worth partial credit. The value of projects and extended assignments will be reduced by one letter grade for each day late.

Students are expected to write homework assignments for each class in their planners daily.  To help your child develop good study habits, please check that your child is writing, completing, and turning in assignments.  Your child’s planner and the team website are useful vehicles for checking assignments.

The team website provides a link for daily homework assignments. Students should be encouraged to utilize this resource on a daily basis.

Absences

It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and make up assignments that are missed when absent.  All work must be made up according to the guidelines in the student handbook.  Assignments are also on the team webpage. Students absent for an extended period of time are encouraged to contact the office to obtain any handouts necessary to complete work.

Daily Expectations

-         Proper spelling & mechanics will be used in assignments in and out of class.

-         Any short answer or essay questions will be answered in complete sentences.

-        Assignments are to be completed on loose-leaf notebook paper.

-         Math calculations will be written in pencil.  In all other classes, students may use    blue/black (not erasable) ink pens or pencils.

-         Students will bring necessary materials to class on a daily basis.

Discipline Policy
