Language Arts
This month we will be reading "Z for Zachariah," a science fiction novel about the aftermath of a nuclear war.  As we work through the book, we will also be learning about verbals (like participles, gerunds, etc.)  Once we finish we will be working with Noodletools while learning what goes into a research project.  Due to time constraints, we will be choosing and narrowing a topic, doing research, making note cards, an outline, citations, a bibliography, and writing an effective introduction and conclusion - everything but the entire paper.  We will further study what can be considered plagiarism and how to avoid it.  If you remember doing these projects with stacks of index cards and style guides, you will be amazed at how much easier it is using available technology!

 Science
In Science, we will be finishing the year with a study of plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes. Students will also have a project, including a presentation at the very end of the year,  that will give them the opportunity to research current scientific technology.
Beginning May 6th, I will be on maternity leave. All lessons have been planned and are on target with our curriculum. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's progress, please call the Albion school office.

American History

Th Third Quarter is upon us and the new semester brings a new focus to our class.  Our country will be going through HUGE changes as we shift, in the north, to a more industrial society and advancing through the Industrial Revolution.  In the south, we will see crops like cotton and tobacco increase the need for slavery.  As the two regions move forward, they will move apart and lead to the Civil War.

Health

For the Month of May, we will be focusing on nutrition, healthy eating and substance abuse. We will begin this unit by watching the documentary "Super Size Me", where a man goes on a 30 day McDonalds binge. Also, the students will be doing a drug research project. Each group will be assinged a drug to research and create a PowerPoint presentation on. Projects will be due on Tuesday, May 28th. All teams will be required to present their project to the class during this week. In addition to doing research in the computer lab, students may also bring in materials from home.

                                      STUDY

Algebra: Algebra is a High School Level Class.  The students will be earning 1 credit of math before they enter High School.  At report card time, you will see a % instead of a letter grade., this is because Semester 1 is worth 40% of their final grade.  The final grade is calculated Quarter 1: 40%  Quarter 2: 40% Exam: 20%.
It is important that they keep up with their grades to give them a buffer for the exam which will cover 5 chapters. The students now have an online part to the book.  They have their username and password for any additional help that they might need at home!
