The Baldwin Wallace University-Strongsville High School partnership on the development of a high school writing center was recently featured at the GEAR UP OHIO Conference in Columbus.  The College Now program, which is working with schools throughout the State of Ohio, is using the partnership that has been cultivated between our two institutions as a model for what secondary schools and institutions of higher learning can do in their regions.
Dr. Susan Oldrieve, BW Professor of English and Associate Dean of the School of Humanities, and Mr. Brian Tumino, SHS Assistant Principal and Secondary Curriculum Liaison, were the featured presenters on the morning of June 23, 2015.   Mr. Tumino discussed the evolution of Strongsville Writing Center/Academic Lab and the many benefits it has provided for the students of SHS.  He then discussed how Strongsville became involved with Baldwin Wallace through the High School-Higher Education Alignment program coordinated through the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County.  Dr. Oldrieve focused her comments on how the university provided students to work as writing coaches and to discuss the importance of being ready for the changes students will experience when transitioning to becoming college freshmen.  The high school students learned skills to enhance their reading and writing skills for college readiness.  Faculty exchanges and professional development for professors and teachers were incorporated into the project.
Dr. Oldrieve also discussed how she and Nadine Grimm of the ESC have been working on funding opportunities to continue the work involved in the project.  Last year, they were able to gain funding through the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and several endowments at Baldwin Wallace.  It is hoped that further funding can be ascertained to expand the program and perhaps add a component to provide for tutoring in mathematics.
