Strongsville City Schools

Awarded $20,000 Grant

Through The GPD Group Employees’ Foundation

Grant Money Will Be Used to Create “SHS Makes!”

A MakerSpace at Strongsville High School

Strongsville, OH (April 11, 2017) - The GPD Group Employees’ Foundation recently announced nearly $515,000 in grant awards, including a $20,000 grant for Strongsville City Schools. The grant dollars awarded to Strongsville will help in the creation of “SHS Makes!” - a Strongsville High School MakerSpace area that features project-based learning labs to provide innovative spaces centered around Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEM / STEAM).

The GPD Group Employees’ Foundation, whose mission is to make a difference in the lives of children, received over 180 applications during the grant cycle ending January 13, 2017. Organizations in Northeast and Central Ohio, Atlanta, Dallas, Indianapolis, Louisville, Phoenix, and Seattle (cities home to GPD offices) were the recipients of these grant awards.

“We are excited to be able to continue our goal of bringing MakerSpace learning environments to each of the schools in our District through this generous grant award from The GPD Group Employees’ Foundation. This MakerSpace will provide our high school students with a place to be creative and innovative, while developing problem-solving skills. This further enhances our efforts to ensure that our students are college and career ready,” said Vicki Turner, Director of Instructional Technology for Strongsville City Schools.

“We thank The GPD Group Employees’ Foundation for this very meaningful grant award. Our high school students are accomplishing amazing things on a daily basis and our new MakerSpace area will surely add endless possibilities for our students. We are already proud of the learning environment at Strongsville High School, but this MakerSpace will further enhance our ability to assist in the growth and development of our students,” said Mark Smithberger, Principal of Strongsville High School.
