‘The Derby’ Opens at Strongsville High School
Spirit Store Combines Coursework and Building Life Skills for Students with Disabilities
Strongsville, OH (March 25, 2021) - The Derby, a brand new spirit shop at Strongsville High School, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony last evening to officially open this new retail store. Several grants, generous donations from the community, and support from multiple departments within the District have led to the development of this unique learning opportunity for students.
Strongsville High School’s Special Education, Business, and Career Tech departments have collaborated to create this space for students with disabilities, to develop workplace readiness skills in the school community. The retail store is currently open during lunch periods for students and staff. Plans continue to be developed to extend the reach of this spirit store and offer merchandise to the community.
In addition to The Derby, SHS has introduced two new courses, Exploring Retail and Entrepreneurial Skills and Independent Living and Career Skills, where students are learning alongside their peers in co-taught classrooms.
The Derby aligns with Strongsville’s Model Mustang by providing students with Innovative, Collaborative, Global, and Empowering experiences within the school and community. The opportunities and skills learned in The Derby will give students with disabilities more involvement within the school community and also model an inclusive setting for the community as a whole.
“The Derby provides an environment for students to gain employment skills and model an inclusive setting for Strongsville High School. We are looking forward to bringing our students, staff, and the entire school community together for this common goal of inclusiveness. Together, we are continuing to strive to create a shared environment that is accepting of all,” said Ms. Cheryl Bizub, Strongsville High School Transition Coordinator and Special Education Department Chair.
Strongsville City Schools, in partnership with the community,
will ensure all students reach their fullest potential through challenging curriculum and activities,
provided by a highly qualified, motivated staff, in a safe, supportive environment with up-to-date facilities and technology.
